Immigration is a worldwide problem, especially from east to west. The UK is a multiracial society. About 7.9% of Britain's total population is represented by ethnic minority communities (Census 2001). The South Asian population was one of the largest ethnic minority groups in the UK, accounting for 2.7% of Britain's total population before 2004 (Sevak et al. 2004). At the time of writing, the fastest immigration is from Poland to the UK, following their joining the European Union in 2004.Immigrants can be from diverse cultures, beliefs, religions and languages. Delivery of maternity services to them could be a challenging task for the health services and the staff involved because of the diversity and difference in requirements. Many studies show that minority ethnic women do not receive a high quality of maternity care for many reasons. Training for cultural sensitivity is an important issue, and art improvement in the knowledge and training of health professionals who care for minority groups is essential.The aim of this paper is to review the literature regarding ethnic diversity practices and requirements in relation to maternity and create awareness to improve understanding among staff.
