Enablers and barriers to implementing unit-specific nursing performance dashboards

PERFORMANCE DATA can be used to guide nurses and managers in their decision-making and facilitate their participation in data-driven care. One strategy to monitor trends and compare specific indicators associated with nursing care is using dashboards that display performance data. In this context, a hospital undertook a corporate-wide initiative that involved the implementation of unit-specific nursing performance dashboards. As little is known empirically on what contributes to nurses using data displayed on dashboards to improve patient care, a qualitative study was undertaken to explore nurses' and managers' perspectives associated with the implementation of unit-specific nursing performance dashboards.
