Recent activity in US courts has illustrated the precarious nature of polystyrene use, a common element of the foodservice industry. There have been a number of disagreements over the status of styrene, the monomer used to make polystyrene. The Styrene Information and Research Centre (Sirc) and Dart Container failed earlier in 2013 in their attempts to convince judge Reggie Walton, presiding in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, that the federal government’s procedures to list styrene as a substance ‘reasonably anticipated’ to cause cancer were not justified.
