It was a true honor for me to be selected to give the Mario S. Verani, Memorial Lecture. Mario was a dear friend, who contributed greatly to the field of nuclear cardiology through his intelligence, originality, insight, enthusiasm, warmth, and sincere dedication to his patients. This article is a summary of my presentation, which was based on concepts developed through interactions with a large team of investigators and collaborators to whom I am sincerely grateful and deeply indebted.
