In 1999, the us Renewable Resources executive steering Group’s 2020 vision for renewable resources set an ambitious target of 10% of demand for chemical feedstocks to be met with plant-derived materials. the government-backed enterprise predicted a five-fold increase in the use of plant-based materials at a time when the science of doing so was nowhere near as developed as its current (and still nascent) status. the engineering behind realising such feedstocks in commercial volumes was even less established.
