Since the first prehistoric weaver bound dyed flax fibres together in Dzudzuana Cave in the Caucasus more than 30,000 years ago, the search has been on to find a better material for textiles. Over thousands of years of textiles, flax, cotton, jute and wool reigned as the most favoured materials; then synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon took over. But in the middle of the 20th century, textiles firms turned back to plants for inspiration.
