Four isolates of Trichoderma selected for antagonism against phytopathogens were screened for the production of chitinase and beta-l,3-glucanase and for the ability to degrade different carbon sources in the liquid medium. Two species of Trichoderma viz, T. harzianum and T.viride were further tested for the degradation of cell walls of phytopathogenic fungi. The release of N-acetylglucosamine and glucose from cell walls and laminarin was studied with crude enzymes. Among four isolates, T. harzianum induced more chitinases on colloidal chitin. The next best was T.viride (Tv3). Cell walls of Sclerotium rolfsii induced more chitinases and beta-l,3-glucanases over those from Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium udum. Crude chitinases of T. harzianum releasedmore glucose from laminarin and N-aeetyl glucosamine from cell walls.
