Hypocrea koningii - teleomorph of Trichoderma koningii, first report from India.

During a study on metabolite production of Trichoderma spp., monoculture of T. koningii, obtained from Dhoni forest soil of Palakkad district (Kerala, India), showed creamy white, hard, globular stromatal growth along with green coloured spores of Trichoderma sp. This was observed after prolonged incubation for 45 days under room temperature (28+or-2 degrees C). On subculturing, the stromata yielded white mycelial growth of T. koningii and later sporulated with green spore mass. The cultural and morphological characters of the organism were studied and identified as the sexual stage of T. koningii, which was confirmed as Hypocrea koningii, the teleomorph of T. koningii. Perusal of literature revealed no reports of the teleomorph of T. koningii from India, hence, it is the first report of H. koningii, the sexual stage of T. koningii, from India.
