摘要

Effective Clinical Practice in Music Therapy: Medical Music Therapy for Adults in Hospital Settings joined the American Music Therapy Association's (AMTA) Monograph Series in Fall 2010. This 355-page book is available to AMTA members for a reduced price. Deanna Hanson-Abromeit, Soozie Cotter-Schaufele, Judy Nguyen Engel, Joanne Loewy, Dawn McDougall Miller, Clare O'Callaghan, Jessica Shaller Gerweck, Xueli Tan, and Joey Walker contributed to this book. Brief biographies would have illuminated the authors' clinical experience and authority on their topics, especially since some authors may be more widely recognized than others. The book has three sections: Medical Music Therapy in Hospital Settings, Music Therapy with Adult Units, and Resources. In Section I, Hanson-Abromeit describes the layout and provides a brief history of medical music therapy's evolution. She defines evidence-based practice, discusses how clinical documentation may support it, and presents quality assurance, program funding, reimbursement, and cost/benefit analysis. The section concludes with issues medical music therapists face in a changing healthcare environment. Clinical areas presented in Section II include obstetrics, intensive care, general medical/surgical, and cancer care. Each chapter is self-contained but Hanson-Abromeit acknowledges that information may be relevant to other medical populations. Each chapter includes a literature review, clinical overview, music therapy applications, and treatment information. Case examples highlight music therapy applications and treatment. Section III contains referral, assessment, and documentation forms, AMTA Fact Sheets, and comprehensive bibliographies for the clinical areas in Section II, plus palliative care. Sample session plans are provided for students, interns, and less experienced music therapists. A clear disclaimer about the importance of individualized treatment and possible contraindications for each of the sessions was warranted but not provided.
