Jaggery Enhances Yield of Paddy Straw Mushroom, Volvariella volvacea

The basal culture medium of Volvariella volvacea infused with jaggery at 1.5 and 2.0% showed early appearance of chlamydospores in 8 days compared to 13 days in control. A higher density of chlamydospores was also noticed in spawn supplementation withjaggery at 2%. In bed substrate, instead of horse gram or red gram powder which are routinely used as supplement in paddy straw mushroom cultivation, jaggery was tried as an alternative supplement. Addition of jaggery at 2% gave a significantly higher yield of 470 g as against 290 g achieved in control. Aqueous spray of 500 ml of jaggery solution at 2% per bed gave a significantly higher yield of 753 g per bed (25%) compared to 685 g (23%) obtained in un-treated control.
