Management of Root-Knot Nematode in Ocimum basilicum Through Bio-organics

Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is severely affected by the infection of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. The infection leads to a considerable reduction in herbage and oil yield. A glasshouse experiment was designed to assess the relativeefficacy of bio-organics viz, vermicomposts of menthol mint (Mentha arvensis), pyrethrum (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium), chamomile (Chamomilla recutita), qinghao (Artemisia annua) and geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), neem cake, bioagents (Trichodermaharzianum strain Thu and Glomus mosseae), and carbofuran on reproduction and infection potential of M. incognita in O. basilicum. Neem cake and T. harzianum improved the growth, biomass and oil yield of the plant. Reductions in the severity of root-knotdisease and population of M. incognita were recorded in plants treated with neem cake and 71 harzianum. Other vermicomposts and G. mosseae also reduced the nematode reproduction and root galling. Various organic materials including vermicomposts, neem cake and 71 harzianum can be considered as a wise option in place of hazardous pesticides use for reducing root-knot disease in O. basilicum and enhancing the oil yield.
