The Journal of Neurogenetics honors Erich Buchner with this Special Issue at the occasion of his retirement from regular teaching duties at Wurzburg University.Erich grew up in Wurzburg and studied physics here, with an influential exchange year at Oberlin College, USA. Erich became fascinated by Drosophila neurogenetics 40 years ago, when it was hardly a research field yet. Karl Georg Gotz at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biological Cybernetics, Tubingen, introduced him to brain science. This was the place to learn psychophysics, neuroethology, computational neuroscience, and quantitative behavioral analysis. Much of the recent renaissance in Drosophila visual system research can be traced back to that epoch.
