Mining Industry is one of the oldest industries in this civilised world. Its contribution to the growth of nations and economic prosperity worldwide is immense. But it has taken the blame as one of the unorganized sectors without adequate planning. This is due to the lack of awareness among general public about its reclamation efforts. The share of damage caused to environment is amplified and projected much more than what it is. As far as opencast mines are concerned, the largest single factor that is responsible for environmental degradation is inadequate landscape management during operation stage and improper mine closure plans.Change in original land use again gives rise to air and water pollution problems, Impact of ground water table is encountered in certain cases where the water table is shallow or in cases where deeper level of opencast workings are envisaged. Terrestrial ecology in terms of similarity index and diversity may also get affected along with disturbance of migratory fauna where forest areas are involved.It is thus very much essential to identify "KPAs" (Key Performance Areas) pertaining to each activity of the industry and its related environmental problems that might be possible. Environmental protection cannot be thus seen in isolation. Even development for aesthetics or visual intrusion also form a part of "long term landscape management".
