Economic growth of a country is intrinsically linked to the judicious development of mineral resources which are finite and non-renewable. India stands on the threshold of achieving accelerated economic growth and to realize this, the need to exploit mineral resources in a meaningful manner cannot be over emphasized. Mineral sector in India in the last few decades has achieved its rate of growth higher than that of rate of economy. The Indian mining industry has acquired a sound base and has already absorbed new technologies and attracted higher investments for a faster rate of growth. The development of any society is judged by the per capita consumption of power and other important items like cement, steel etc. The requirements of limestone for steel production, coal for power generation, and other minerals for the growth of industrial production has opened up new vistas for the development of mining sector in India.
