About the organisation of the World Mining Congress and the merits of its founder Professor Dr. Boleslaw 'Krupinski

The author, now at the age of 83, had been connected with the World Mining Congress (WMC) and with its International Organizing Committee (IOC) since the spring of 1959. At that time - having just become a Professor of Mining Engineering of the University/School of Mines in Leoben/Austria - he attended as a guest at meeting of the IOC in Salzburg/Austria. It was the first meeting in a western country of the organization which had been founded in Poland in 1958. In 1961, the author attended the second World Mining Congress in Prague, CSSR. In the beginning of 1962 - after some correspondence in the preceding months - he accepted the invitation to become a member of the IOC extended to him by the founder and chairman of the Committee, the eminent Polish Professor of Mining Engineering Dr. Boleslaw Krupinski. From 13th to 16th September 1962 he had welcomed as the host the 12th meeting of the Committee at his Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Leoben. Since then and until the year 2002 he has been involved in all activities of the IOC, for instance as one of the main organizers of the Third World Mining Congress in Salzburg/Austria in 1963 and as a vice-president of the IOC since 1975. The last of the seventeen congresses which he could attend personally had been in Las Vegas/USA in the year 2000. In 2002 he retired as vice-president and became a honorary member of the IOC. And in the meantime, next to the honorary member from Romania, Prof. Dr. St. Covaci, the author has had the longest membership and with that the experiences in the organization of World Mining Congresses (WMC).
