Experience with the operation of powered support longwall face in SECL with particular reference to Balrampur

While some people believe that there are noprospects of longwall technology in India due to adverse geo-mining conditions, it is the opinion of the authors that if a suitablelocale can be identified and proper geo-technical investigationsdone to assess the capacity of the supports, there is no reason whythe PSLW face would not be a success. Even today we do not haveany expertise to assess the capacity of the supports correctly. Wealso cannot predict the cavability of roof in advance. Most of thecountries where longwall technology has been proved successfuldepend greatly on the numerical model for assessing the stratabehaviour in advance.
