Washability characteristics of lower Gondwana coals of West Bokaro

About 99 percent of Indian coal resources belongs to lower Gondwana coals. West Bokaro coals contain different coal seams and are assessed by washability characteristics to predict their behaviour during coal beneficiation using gravity methods. The index for washability (IW) of different coal seams varied between 8 and 41 with an average of <20. This indicates the difficult nature of these coals and needs a sharp separators like DM cyclone to produce clean coal with lower ash (<19 percent). The West Bokaro washery process, problems and approaches are also discussed in the light of washability characteristics.
