An investigation of the impact of haul truck size in surface mines on maintenance cost

The trend in surface mining equipment has been towards larger and larger equipment. While this approach has been successful in achieving lower cost production, little effort has gone into modeling the impact of larger equipment in a quantifiable manner. With the next generation of larger equipment on the drawing hoard there is beginning to be some skepticism as to when the law of diminishing returns will come into effect. This paper attempts to provide a methodology for assessing the impact of equipment size on the mine. A case study is used to test the proposed methodology
