Environmental umbrella for mine waste disposal on geoengineering considerations

During recent years industrialization and urbanization has given a tremendous boost to the requirement of building materials. The Geological Survey of India had taken up a survey of southern part of Uttar Pradesh to identify construction material resources. The survey was undertaken with a view to characterize different material as per the geotechnical parameters defined by Bureau of Indian Standards. The construction material so investigated related to its use as rail ballast, road metal, cement concrete aggregates, pavement/flooring, roofing, riprap and armoured stone, inlay work, facing stone masonry work and sculpture.However, emphasis was laid on use as rail ballast, road metal, cement concrete aggregates, riprap and armoured stone. The surveys were undertaken in the districts of Agra, Allahabad, Banda, Hamirpur, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Mirzapur and Varanasi. Some resource identification was also undertaken in the sub-Himalayan areas. During this survey 33 quarries in parts of Mirzapur, Sonbhadra and Varanasi divisions and 34 quarries from Lalitpur district were investigated in detail. The parameters like density, specific gravity, porosity, water absorption and slake durability besides impact value, crushing value and Los Angeles abrasion value were determined. It was also emphasized that extensive mining of these stones is causing environmental degradation specially in terms of mine waste and it is proposed to utilize such environmentally degraded areas in a more profitable manner by timely removal of dumped waste material from lease hold areas and used suitably for reclamation of land in mineearby areas; in aggregate for construction activity and riprap and stone pitching purposes etc. if found suitable. Deeper pits in the querried areas may be developed into places of tourist interes/aquaculture etc.
