Bivariate logit analysis of mine injury data - a case study

In view of the fact that mine accidents/injuries are a predominant phenomenon causing loss to every corners of the society such as the miners, the officers, the unions and the government, statistical methods are required to analyze injury data. This paper presents a statistical approach of accident data analysis through a case study The variables chosen for the analysis are miner's age, experience, occupation, shift of working, body-parts-injured and time-lapsed at the time of accidents. The relationships between each of the variables with degree of injury were examined through the bivariate logit analysis. The case study results showed that the injuries to the aged workers are very likely to be serious compared to the young workers. Maintenance crew injuries are 5 times more likely to be serious than reportable compared to the production crew injuries. Among the parts of body injured, finger hand, and leg were the commonly injured body parts; however finger injuries are 25 times more likely to be serious than reportable compared to hand injuries.
