irimary function of an explosive is to break the rock-'mass, wherever it is placed, to a desired size - without any blast related nuisance like ground vibrations, air blasts and fly-rocks. It is also expected that the right use of explosives would not generate over break, crushing of rocks or formations of toes. Innovations abound in its applications to newer situations. Even with all its limitations, till date, there has not been a cheaper and functional substitute of the explosives for rock blasting.
