Aerobic microbial processes are especially suitable for the remediation of diesel fuel contaminated, finely grained soils. An aqueous sludge of the soils is usually aerated in various bioreactors. The present paper deals with the bioremediation of diesel fuel contaminated soil in a rotating drum with lifting flights. The oxygen supply for the microbial population is an important parameter in these processes. The microbial process is influenced by the oxygen uptake rate. The ratio of the oxygen consumed (OU) to the CO_2 produced (CP) was used to detect the transition of the aerobic growth to anaerobic. With increasing OU/CP ratio the decomposition of the diesel fuel was decelerated and the nitrogen respiration increased, but the final conversion of the diesel fuel components was not influenced.
