Coal mining industry in India faces a daunting challenge in terms of new technology adoption for meeting India's burgeoning energy needs. With a current level of production of nearly 510 Mt where the dominant share is from surface mining, underground coal mining sector has largely been a technological laggard. There is an increasing perception that proactive efforts are called for in transformation of underground coal mining technology to meet the future challenges and vastly upgrade the production level and productivity from underground sector to make it cost-effective.
