The Journal of Mines, Metals & Fuels hosted a 2-day Workshop on Contract Mining in December 7-8, 2007 at the Hotel Oberoi Grand, Kolkata. The Workshop was supported and sponsored by BEML Limited and SREI Infrastructure Finance Ltd. The workshop highlighted on the contract mining, being practiced worldwide as outsourcing of engineering services which offers obvious advantages. There has been considerable activity in Australia and Indonesia vis-a-vis contract mining and they have been successful simply because they provide more tonnes for less cost. There are a number of basic, often inter-related reasons, which include people, industrial relations, attitudes, availability of contractor's fleet of mobile equipment, flexibility amongst others. It was pointed out that contact mining can also encompass leasing of mining equipment.
