In power plant technology modern gas scrubbers are used for flue-gas desulfurization of coal-fired plants in order to absorb pollutants such as sulfur dioxide in aqueous solution. For this, the washing liquid is atomized by numerous nozzles. Different designs are used, such as spiral, hollow and full cone-type nozzles [1]. Here, the fluid dynamics offers options for improvement. By a special arrangement of the nozzles in several spraying planes it is possible that the sprays of the nozzles penetrate themselves mutually. The effect of the secondary dispersion, which occurs with intersection and penetrating of the sprays during atomization in the flue-gas scrubber, can be used effectively for the improvement of the atomization efficiency and the mass transfer with the absorption of the noxious gases in a flue-gas desulfurization plant (FGD).
