Pin-pointed modification of glass surfaces by using specific washing compounds

The surfaces of three different types of flatglass wen characterized with XRF analysis prior to and after washing with water only with neutral, acid and alkaline washing agents. Point defects were identified by Auger spectroscopy analysis as enriched with sodium and calcium. The quality of subsequent soft-coated and roughened glass panes was examined by eyesight. Best results were obtained by washing with acid washing agents which increase the leaching of sodium and calcium but decrease the dissolution of silicate. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
