Aqueous-based solutions have been developed which provide substantial increases in strength of cut edges of flat glass articles. By applying the aqueous solution to the damaged glass surface of interest and curing the coating, significant increases in fracture strength (50-80% on average) can be realized. It is believed that solution infiltrates the flaws on the glass surface and acts to 'heal' the damage. This flaw 'healing' can increase sample strength from a starting value of 70 MPa to more than 170 MPa and allow a manufacturer to use thinner glass or replace other more costly strengthening techniques such as tempering or polishing.
