A Lessons-Learned Knowledge Management System for Engineers

Lessons learned is a method of collecting the unique and important knowledge gleaned from experience. While most engineers have heard of this often cited, even cliche term, few really know what this is, and even fewer know how to set up a proper lessons-learned process and use it correctly. The lessons-learned process can be thought of as a smaller planet in the greater universe of corporate knowledge management. In this article, we focus on lessons learned as a way to increase the productivity of the engineering organization, as well as increase the quality of its work product by decreasing costs related to mistakes and rework. But what is it, and how do engineers configure their organization or department to use it efficiently?
