Gasification in a fluidized-bed (FB) gasifier is one way of achieving the best energy efficiency and environmental performance from brown coal (lignite) - an abundant and low-cost fuel occurring in many parts of the world. However, gasification of some lignites, such as those found in Australia, poses some technical challenges. The Australian lignites in particular are soft, and this leads to the high proportion of fines (less than 100 micron dia.particles),so proper gasifier design is essential to minimize the loss of unconverted carbon out of the system in the form of elutriated dusts, which severely affect the overall conversion efficiency.
