Implementing Perimeter Air-monitoring Programs

Perimeter or fenceline monitoring systems that track ambient air quality are widely used around hazardous waste sites,landfill excavation projects,dredging operations,hazardous,toxic and radioactive waste(HTRW)sites,ports,and manufactured gas plant(MGP)site-remediation projects and to a lesser extent,around the perimeters of industrial facilities.Since fenceline monitoring is intended to both protect the public health in the vicinity of a specific site and help site owners to reduce potential liability with respect to site activities,a number of very important issues must be addressed when designing and implementing such systems.Based on the recommendations offered here,a site-specific Perimeter Monitoring Plan,detailed in the box on p.65,should be developed.
