A Market based study on Species Composition and Quantitative variation of Murrels in Dhemaji District of Assam, India

Seven species of murrels ( the snake heads ) belonging to family Channidae were recorded during the study from July, 2009 to March, 2010. As per quantitative variation in relation to numerical occurrence, Channa punctata was the largest and Channa bleheri was the smallest contributors to the market. The peak season of the species was observed during October-November when the flood experiences to recede. Three prominent fish landing areas were observed from where the market is fed by the murrel species. The rampant fishing from natural wetland habitats was found as a matter of concern for which the present study emphasizes the need for conservation of the studied fish species of murrel from the region.
