Throughout Appalachia and the western coalfields and into Canada, the name Moon Mullins is as well known to the underground mining industry as is that of his employer for the past four decades, Joy Mining Machinery. After more than forty years in mining equipment sales and service, 37 of them with Joy, Richard Clayton Mullins-known to literally thousands simply as "Moon"-retired after the first of the year, February 1st officially. "With a last name of 'Mullins', the 'Moon' nickname after the comics character was automatic," Moon recalled. "Problem was, there were a lot of other 'Moons' running around out there so initially I prefaced mine with 'RC to set me apart. Somewhere along the line, the 'RC fell by the wayside."
