Coal shipments on US railroads were down 3.9 percent while coke shipments declined 20 percent in the week ending May 31, according to the Association of American Railroads. Coal shipments totaled 133,718 carloads in the 2008 week, down from 139,111 carloads in the year-ago week. Year to date, shipments were up 4 percent to 3.14 million carloads. Coke shipments totaled 4,007 carloads, down from 5,006 carloads in the year-ago period. Year to date, shipments were down 33 percent to 82,367 carloads.
