American Electric Power's coal-fired generating units ran more frequently in the third quarter because of the hot weather, and the company is seeing a switch back to coal with natural gas prices rising, AEP President and CEO Nick Akins said Wednesday. Akins, during a third-quarter earnings call, also said the company's new 600-MW John W. Turk Jr. ultra-supercritical coal plant in Arkansas is test-firing on coal for the first time this week.
