Locking in the benefits of clean coal: China and India are securing their energy future

Dynamic nations in Asia are utilizing coal to both support economic growth and improve the environment. This cornerstone role of coal is dramatically apparent in the rising economies of China and India, two countries with a combined total of 2.5 billion people where coal accounts for over 75 percent and 65 percent of power respectively. Coal is propelling both nations to the center of the world's economic stage. Since 2005, the GDP growth in the United States has been a paltry 5 percent. Meanwhile, over the same period, China's GDP has grown 85 percent and India's 60 percent. And now both nations are building advanced coal power plants to ensure affordable and reliable electricity for decades. Indeed, by 2015 almost 50 percent of the world's most efficient coal power plants will be in China or India.
