We describe decoherence for quantum carpets using a model-independent formalism ruled by a characteristic time tau. We rnd that the rate of decoherence depends critically on the ratio between tau and tau (E) = h/2 sigma (H). When tau = tau (E) 1 decoherence is very slow, while it becomes very fast for the opposite case. The rate of decoherence is described in terms of the fidelity function. [References: 30]
