Nowadays we take it for granted that gardens are vital for the survival of Britain's wildlife, but, playing devil's advocate for a moment, is this really the case? How do we know? Until recently, there was little scientific evidence to support the importance of gardens to our wildlife. The only thorough study was that made by ecologist Jennifer Owen in her suburban home in Leicester. From 1972 to 1986, she documented the wildlife in her garden in extraordinary detail, recording no fewer than 1,757 animal species and 422 kinds of plant.
