Researchers at tomato breeders roundtable share regional trends data

The 2007 Tomato Breeders Roundtable I held in State College, Pa., in November I drew over 80 researchers from a dozen countries. Majid Foolad, professor of plant genetics, Penn State University, hosted the four-day meeting. Over 20 papers were presented comprehending topics on innovative breeding technologies, tracing genetic resistance to several diseases, variations among landraces, breeding for flavor and nutrition and more. The reports from various tomato growing and marketing regions were particularly timely. These shed light on trends in acreage in specific areas, production practices, prevalent diseases, consumer demand, issues, and challenges facing the industry.
