NIPSCO may restart Mitchell plant in 2004

Northern Indiana Public Service plans to meet future generation needs may include restarting its 500-MW Dean H. Mitchell generating station in 2004. Mitchell had taken about 1 million tons/year of Powder River Basin coal before it stopped producing electricity in December 2001 and was mothballed in March 2002 (CO 12/10/01). In July, NIPSCO mentioned the possibility of reopening Mitchell in 2004 (PCT 7/22/03). But, in a recently issued request seeking bids on power supplies, MPSCO revisited in more detail the possibility of restarting Mitchell. "The RFP explores a number of possible purchases ranging from 50 to 500 megawatts over three to seven years," the Merrillville, Ind., utility said. "Proposals are due back to the company by January 9, 2004."
