If you think America is a melting pot, just wait until you see the slides Vicki Bess of BBC Laboratories, Tempe, Ariz., displays when she gives a presentation on soil microbiology. It's good to have lots of different kinds of microbes in your soil, she claims. "One of the first questions I'm typically asked is, 'Why would you be interested in monitoring your soil microbiology?'" Bess says. "Most growers are quite familiar with monitoring N, P and K, the nutrients in the soil, but some are not as familiar with the benefits of monitoring for soil microorganisms."
