Sulfur Dust May Help Ease Prevalence of Powdery Mildew

The 2010 season was the third year in a row that powdery mildew has been a significant problem for California tomato growers. The virus, which historically, was never a big problem before, is different from most other fungi which need much wetter conditions to survive. "This fungus can survive in pretty dry environments because the tomato canopies get pretty big, which means that the fungi gets all the moisture it needs from the humidity inside the plant," says Brenna Aegerter, a farm adviser in SanJoaquin County for the University of California Cooperative Extension.
