With demand for high quality heirloom tomatoes still expanding, many greenhouse and hydroponic growers have a potentially very profitable niche market with the supply of year round fruit. However, the open-pollinated heirloom or heritage tomato plantis a rather different proposition for commercial production than the standard greenhouse hybrids growers are familiar with. While tomato hybrids have been breed extensively for decades to provide high yields, multiple disease and physiological disorder resistance, balanced growth form and firm fruit with long shelf life, the open pollinated heirloom varieties have few of these characteristics and need a skilled grower armed with good plant husbandry knowledge.
