Florida program demonstrates the value of tomato research

Facing stiff competition from greenhouse-grown cluster tomatoes from Canada and Europe and "vine-ripe" tomatoes from Mexico, the Florida tomato industry is committed to doing what needs to be done to retain, if not improve, its market share. That isapparent from one of a number of high-quality research reports delivered durina the 2002 Florida Tomato Institute, held Sept. 4 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Naples, Fla. Elizabeth A. Baldwin was one of more than a dozen researchers reporting on studies ranging from what's being done to improve tomato flavor to what growers can do to combat tomato diseases such as bacterial spot and late blight. The program was put together by the University of Florida Extension, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
