Kentucky Pioneer's IGCC struggles for foothold

In a move that was no surprise considering recent history, East Kentucky Power Co-op on Oct. 5 sent a letter to Global Energy saying it is terminating a contract to buy electricity from the Kentucky Pioneer Energy project. Kentucky Pioneer is a 520-MW (net) project that would use advanced integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology to process a combination of coal and municipal waste. The project, at the time located elsewhere, got a Department of Energy clean-coal award in the mid-1990s.
