Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad President Kevin Schieffer said Feb.21 that DM&E will purchase the assets of I&M Rail Link for an undisclosed price. With plans to ship millions of tons of coal out of the southern Powder River Basin to midwestern utilities, DM&E would effectively more than double its trackage size with the IMRL purchase. DM&E will operate IMRL, to be renamed the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad, through a new holding company, Cedar American Rail Holdings. Schieffer will remain as president of all the companies. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and successful financing.
