Comparative studies of the major components present in essential oil of commercial fennel.

The hydro-distilled fennel seed oil obtained from local market of Kanpur and Delhi were analysed by GC and GC-MS, which led to the identification of 15 compounds representing 99.37 and 98.96% respectively of the total oil. The major compounds were found in the range of limonene (6.32 & 2.66), L-fenchone (9.38 & 10.93), methyl chavicol (3.53 and 3.84), trans-anethole (72.82 and 79.08) and p-anisaldehyde (4.96 & 0.24). The oil yields were 2.1 and 1.9% (v/w) respectively.
