Antibacterial activity of whole plant extracts of Mimosa pudica.

Mimosa pudica Linn. belongs to the family Mimosaceae and is commonly known as touch-me-not plant It is an important plant which is used for various ailments in Ayurvedic system of medicine. The present study was carried out to evaluate antibacterial activity of Mimosa pudica against seven pathogenic bacteria. Two concentrations of cold and hot methanol extracts of Mimosa pudica were prepared. The antibacterial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method and to measure the MIC values, various concentrations were assayed against the test bacteria. Hot methanol extracts showed high inhibition zones than the cold methanol extracts. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecalis were highly susceptible bacteria to the hot methanol extracts of Mimosa pudica. Ciprofloxacine (5 micro g) and DMSO were used as positive and negative controls respectively. Three replicates were maintained for each extract against test bacteria. The results provide promising information for the potential use of Mimosa pudica methanol extracts in the treatment of infections caused by bacteria.
