Correlations between seed yield, volatile oil content and its constituents in cumin

Twenty four entries of cumin were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications in a coordinated yield trial. The mean plot observations were recorded on volatile oil content (%), volatile oil yield (1/ha), seed yield, 1000-seed weightand oxygenated and hydrocarbon compounds in the volatile oil. The range of variability were higher for volatile oil yield and seed yield followed by ratio of oxygenated : hydrocarbon compounds, 1000-seed weight and volatile oil content (%). In the frequency distribution curve for the morpho-metric traits, volatile oil and volatile oil yield showed a normal distribution pattern in the present study indicating thereby the quantitative nature of genetic control for both the characters. Five entries GC-3, JC-2022, JC-2006, JC-2020 and GC-2, owing to their higher volatile oil content and oil yield, deserved to be recommended for cultivation and to be used in further breeding programmes as a parents. Among the studied plant traits, seed yield came out as themajor attribute for the progenies of higher oil yield in cumin in view of its significantly positive association with oil yield.
