Wisconsin PSC approves retrofits at Oak Creek plant for 40-yr. old units

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approved We Energies' application to spend an estimated 830 million dollars to retrofit the Oak Creek power plant's 40-year old coal-fired units with pollution control technology. We Energies will retrofit the plant instead of retiring units 5-8, by installing wet scrubbers and selective catalytic reduction units to minimize emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The retrofits will help the plant comply with an upcoming mercury rule. We Energies intends to complete the retrofits by 2012. The company has contracted with Washington Group International to engineer, procure and construct the controls.
