Politics will be part of the equation in determining the pace of coal-fired retirements caused by the implementation of US Environmental Protection Agency rules, according to analysts. Coal-fired plants will have to take into account the costs associated with retrofitting older and smaller facilities with pollution controls required by EPA rules compared with the benefits of simply retiring the facility. But there will also be political pressure to keep coal-fired generation going.
